PhD Degree awarded!

(18.10.2005) On 14th of October, 2005, at 13.00 hrs following a 6 years long programme I was awarded the PhD Degree (Doktor der Wissenschaften) with "Magna cum Laudae” honors.

The title of the thesis was  " Personal research in dental implants in dogs” and the thesis focused on an extensive comparison between 3 different systems of implants, bicortical, screw and cylinder, and studied many of the aspects regarding osseointegration, osteoconductive and inductive materials, guided tissue regeneration, quantitative and qualitative implantation success parameter determination.

The degree was awarded following a 6 years part-time programme that included 3 major examinations, 4 major presentations, 2 publications and the research work. This project was self funded and all the related research on animals followed the guidelines on humane treatment of animals, moreover all the animals used in the project were owner owned and thus implied a strict anesthesia, surgical, pre and postoperative pain management protocol.

The public presentation took place in the "Blue aula” of the University of Veterinary Medicine of Cluj (Klausenburg), Romania, at 12.00  o’clock local time (Fig.1) The hearing and examination committee consisted of 5 renown scientists (Fig. 2 and Fig. 3) which are from left side to right: Prof. Dr. Muste A.- the present Head of the Department of Surgery at Veterinary Medicine Faculty of Cluj, Prof. Dr. Mates N. – former Head of the Department of Surgery of Cluj and principal thesis Supervisor, Prof. Dr. Rotaru O. – Head of the Sanitary and Veterinary Control Department and President of the PhD Hearing Committee, Prof. Dr. Rotaru A. – former Head of the Maxillo - Facial  and Plastic Reconstruction Department at the Human Dental Medical Department of the Faculty of Dentistry in Cluj and second thesis Supervisor. On the right side of the photos (2 and 3) is Prof. Dr. Bolte S. – the Head of the Department of  Surgery at the Veterinary Faculty of Timisoara(Temeschburg) and third thesis Supervisor.

Following a 30 minute presentation, the public defense was over and, all the members of the committee had a short speech regarding the thesis and presentation. At the end all the auditorium: professors, assistants, students and general public were asked if they agree with conferring the title of PhD upon me. After a positive reaction of the auditorium, the president communicated the extraordinary decision of the committee to confer additionally, the second highest distinction "Magna cum Laudae” to the recipient.

At the end there was a long row of people congratulating me (Fig. 4) and we can see a very happy me (Fig. 5) surrounded by my family from let to right: myself, my sister -  a human dentist herself, Alessia – a very pretty niece, my mother – probably the best mom on earth. Many thanks to all my friends here in Vienna: Prof. Dr. Zetner - my Boss, mentor and friend, Mag.
